This young earthenware face probably hails from West Africa and can be dated around the turn of the 19th century. The powerful facial expression is established by the eyes and lips that jut out creating an inexplicable tension. In Africa, representations of women's faces, as is the case here, often feature very broad foreheads and striking hairdos, and the stylized forms tend towards an almost hieratic harmony.
